The special intelligence squad of the superintendent of police of Dakshina Kannada district has unearthed a case of murder that had been committed two years ago. Siddappa (36), a labourer of Bagalkot origin, who had come to the city seeking work, was murdered and his body was buried by his killers. The wife of the murdered man is one among the six accused in the case.
Mohammed Anwar (27) from Ballurgudde in Kannur village, Mohammed Naufal (20) from Ballurgudde, presently living in Valachil Padav, Abdul Basheer (34), Mohammed Salim (23), Mohammed Naushad (29) and Renuka alias Kasturi (26), wife of the late Siddappa from Hosa Gudri Katram Kuntimane of Kadlimatti village of Bagalkot district, have been arrested by the policemen, relating to this case.
The theory of the policemen is that Kasturi had illicit relationship with Mohammed Anwar from Ballurgudde. The two, with the help of four other accused, had killed Siddappa on December 6, 2007, the policemen have claimed. It is learnt, Kasturi had been married to Hanumant, brother of her mother, when she was very young. As she did not like Hanumant, she later married Siddappa and lived in Mangalore with husband and a six-year old son. After she was involved with an affair with Mohammed Anwar, at the advice of Anwar, who thought that Siddappa can become a stumbling block in their affair, a plan to kill her husband was hatched. At their advice, Kasturi brought Siddappa near the railway track in Ballurgudde, where four men held Siddappa, while Anwar tightened a nylon rope around Siddappa's neck and killed him. Thereafter, they buried the body of Siddappa near this spot. The policemen, upon digging the spot of the murder, recovered pieces of bone, a nylon rope, pieces of clothes and a belt reportedly worn by Siddappa at the time of murder. |

The Anti-naxal Squad was engaged in an exchange of fire with the naxals at Yadadalli Dindodi near Nemmar near here, for about an hour on the morning of Friday August 21. Although none of the naxals could be caught, the policemen believe that a few of them would have sustained injuries.
The police team had launched a thorough search on Friday morning, after getting reliable information that a gang of naxals had found shelter at Valkigudda in Dindodi. As the policemen neared the spot where the naxals were hiding, a naxal woman on sentry duty there, fired at the policemen, thereby alerting the gang. The policemen retaliated, and the exchange of fire continued for about an hour.
After the naxals fled, the policemen found that one of the steel plates the naxals had used for having food, had been hit by a bullet. Blood was found splattered near the plate, which is supposed to be that of a naxal. The policemen immediately launched a combing operation in nearby villages like Sunkadamakki, Yadadalli, Harebeelalu etc., but in vain. Western range inspector general of police Gopal Hosur, superintendent of police Nagaraj and other senior officials visited the spot and guided the investigations. |

Vehemently opposing the proposed diversion scheme of Netravathy river, the lifeline of coastal Dakshina Kannada district, Karnataka Coastal Development Authority Chairman B Nagaraj Shetty said an ambitious plan for interlinking all the 16 rivers in three costal districts was under preparation.
The former fisheries minister felt the Nethravathy diversion scheme, mooted for providing drinking water supply and irrigation facilities to drought prone districts such as Kolar, Tumkur, Chikballapur and Bangalore Rural districts, would be detrimental to the coastal region.
However, he said the Authority would study reports submitted by A G Kodgi, K C Reddy and G S Paramashivaiah on interlinking of rivers and diversion of the Netravathi river project.
``We will come out with a possible and feasible report on interlinking of 13 rivers of Dakshina Kannada, Udupi districts and three rivers of Uttara Kannada district,’’he said. |

A day after Tamil Nadu ’s public works department secretary Ramasubramanyam put the Karnataka government on notice for not making the shortfall in the release of 20 tmcft of Cauvery water so far, the state government has started releasing water from the Krishna Raja Sagar (KRS) dam.
Even as the farmers of the Cauvery belt criticised the B S Yeddyurappa regime for bending backwards to please Tamil Nadu chief minister M Karunanidhi as a quid-pro-quo for the ``statue diplomacy,’’ Karnataka’s home minister and a close confidant of the chief minister claimed that the state was releasing ``only excess water.’’
The authorities have released excess water into the river as they should not impound water beyond 123 ft of the reservoir, Dr Acharaya said pointing out that 12,000 cusecs of water was being released into the Cauvery River from Tuesday morning. The maximum capacity of the reservoir is 124.8 ft. |
