The revised Akrama-Sakrama scheme, which was approved by the state Cabinet on Thursday, will benefit about seven lakh properties in Bangalore and about five lakh properties in other cities. The government hopes to collect a whopping Rs 5,000 crore as fine from the scheme in Bangalore city alone. Apart from penalty, there will be a substantial increase in the revenues of urban local bodies as all these illegal constructions would come under the tax net from next year.
The Akrama-Sakrama scheme was first mooted by the S M Krishna government and later the JD(S)-BJP coalition government had passed the Bill in this connection. But the scheme had to be kept in abeyance as people strongly protested the high rate of penalty. As a result, the BJP government immediately after coming to power constituted a Cabinet committee under Transport Minister R Ashok and the committee submitted its report to the government recently.
Stating that the scheme was a one-time opportunity to get building violations regularised, Ashok said he had recommended to the government not to encourage violations in future and initiate criminal proceedings on both property owners and BBMP officials. |

Flaying former prime minister Deve Gowda's allegations in Parliament of lapses in flood relief works in the state, Chief Minister BS Yeddyurappa asked Gowda to visit flood-ravaged districts and study the matter first before commenting on the situation.
"Karnataka made history by spending Rs 1,000 crore in a day for flood relief works. I have the highest respect for Gowda, but instead of raising the issue in Parliament, he could have visited the flood-affected areas to study the situation. I request him to discuss the matter and guide me," he said.
He was speaking to reporters here on Wednesday. He criticised the Opposition's criticism that the CM was only laying foundation stones for the rehabilitation houses. |

The Telugu Desam Party on Friday asked Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to convene an all-party meeting to discuss the "impending threat to democracy’’ from the mining mafia.
TDP president N Chandrababu Naidu said likeminded parties would join to fight the mining mafia.
Naidu, who was here to seek cooperation of leaders to launch a united agitation against the mining mafia in Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka, met CPM leaders Prakash Karat, Sitaram Yechury, CPI leader A B Bardan and RLD leader Ajit Singh.
Naidu accused the owners of the Obulapuram Mining Company Gali Janardhan Reddy and his brothers of indulging in illegal mining activities in Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka and dictating terms to politicians in both the states with the ``ill-gotten’’ money. He said the mining mafia was a threat to democracy. |
