IT majors, fancy shopping malls, homes and business establishments in India's tech hub will shut off lights for an hour Saturday evening to observe Earth Hour.
The Karnataka capital, one of the highest power consuming cities of India, is joining 2,000 cities in over 80 countries to observe Earth Hour, to create awareness on effect of climate change.
Those participating in the Earth Hour will Saturday switch off lights in their homes, offices and business establishments at 8.30 pm, for exactly 60 minutes. |

With the onset of summer, several hundreds of villages in Karnataka are likely to face severe drinking water crisis during the Lok Sabha election period.
Now, about 45 villages in different districts of the State have been facing severe drinking water crisis and water was being supplied through tankers. There are 56,000 villages in 29 districts of Karnataka.
Minister for Rural Development and Panchayat Raj Shobha Karandlaje told here on Thursday that drinking water was being supplied through tankers to 45 villages of Belgaum, Bijapur, Kolar and Raichur districts. |

The BJP government in Karnataka on Monday lambasted the UPA for the BCCI's decision to shift the IPL's second edition outside India, citing security reasons due to the Lok Sabha polls, and said the state had expressed willingness to provide security for matches here.
"Our government was ready to provide security to IPL matches in Bangalore. Our police had already communicated the decision to organisers. But the UPA failed in this regard," Minister for Transport R Ashok told a press conference here.
The Centre's decision, which led to the IPL event being shifted abroad, has shown the country's image in poor light, particularly Bangalore as "a terror threat destination", the senior BJP leader said.

Karnataka would be the first state to use GPS technology to ensure effective enforcement of the model code of conduct by utilising the web-enabled system to monitor the movement of its election officials, according to Chief Electoral Officer, M N Vidyashankar.
The GPS system would enable to track the location of its officer and to ensure that they were present at the location where they have been deployed, Mr. Vidyashankar told reporters here on Monday.
"This will prove highly effective in monitoring the officials and checking out whether a concerned official was present at the spot where deployed, especially where there has been a seizure of goods or likelihood of any violation of the code of conduct," he said. |

As election fever catches up in the country, Congress president Sonia Gandhi launched the party's Lok Sabha campaign with a rally in Davanagere, Karnataka.
In the rally, Sonia said that it is time people decide between Congress, a party which had always been against communalism, and the people spreading hatred.
She also blasted the Third Front saying there are as many prime ministerial candidates in the Front as there are parties. |
