Karnataka Government to review industrial policy to increase investment
Tuesday, 17 June 2008
The new BJP government in Karnataka has announced that it would effect changes in the current Industrial Policy 2006-07 in the next three months to facilitate greater investment in the state.

The decision to review the policy comes in the wake of a fall in investments and manufacturing in the state during the last fiscal. In 2007-08, only 728 projects worth Rs 10,309 crore were cleared as compared to 881 projects worth Rs 11,954 crore approved in 2006-07.

Speaking to reporters during his first press conference, Industries Minister Murugesh Rudrappa Nirani said that all stakeholders would be consulted and industrial models in Gujarat, Maharashtra and Tamil Nadu will be studied before modifying the policy.

Karnataka CM to lead all-party delegation to PM
Monday, 16 June 2008
Accusing the UPA Government of meting out "step motherly" treatment to Karnataka, Chief Minister B S Yeddyurappa on Sunday said he would soon lead an all-party and MPs delegation to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to press for the long-pending demands of the state.

The demands included according classical language status to Kannada and special status to the under developed North Karnataka region.

The Centre, which approved classical language status to Tamil, did not consider the state's request for a similar status to Kannada despite repeated pleas by it, Yeddyurappa charged at a press conference here.

"People of Karnataka are losing their patience over the delay. The Centr should not treat our patience as weakness", he said.

Centre to release 1.4 lakh tonnes of fertiliser for Karnataka
Thursday, 12 June 2008
The Centre has agreed to release 1.4 lakh tonnes of di-ammonium phosphate (DAP) fertiliser for Karnataka this month, 20,000 tonnes more than the state's estimated requirement.

The announcement came after State Chief Minister B S Yeddyurappa met Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and Fertiliser Minister Ramvilas Paswan in New Delhi on Wednesday night.

Karnataka has witnessed violent protests by farmers demanding fertilisers in recent days. On Tuesday, one farmer was killed in police firing at Haveri town.

"The Prime Minister gave a patient hearing and listened to the problem of fertiliser shortages in Karnataka," said Yeddyurappa in a statement on the outcome of his Delhi visit. "He expressed solidarity with the people of Karnataka and assured every possible effort to solve the fertiliser shortage crisis."

Yeddyurappa said Paswan assured supply of 1.2 lakh tonnes of DAP by June 20. Another 20,000 tonnes of the fertiliser will be made available by June 30.

Similarly, 1.1 lakh tonnes of complex fertilisers (supply for entire June) will be made available by June 20, said the Chief Minister.
