Karnataka church attacks: First draft of inquiry
Tuesday, 02 February 2010
ImageWho is guilty of attacking a series of churches in and around Mangalore in Karnataka in 2008? A former High Court judge says it appears that rightwing Hindu groups - the Bajrang Dal, Sri Rama Sene and the Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) - are to blame.

Based on meetings with hundreds of witnesses, a commission headed by Justice B K Somasekhara states this in an interim report; the final report is expected later this year.

Worrying for the government, Somasekhara also says that top police officers, district administration and other authorities appear to have colluded with the right-wing organisations in these attacks - and that authorities did not treat the incidents sympathetically when alerted.

No individual names are mentioned, because a notice needs to be issued first to any accused to allow them to explain their position.

Marie Joseph said the police department had withdrawn security to the church, as there had been no church attacks in Mysore in the last two years.

Yeddyurappa, a bloody bastard: Gowda
Monday, 11 January 2010
ImageThe political mudslinging over the NICE project plunged to an unprecedented low with former Prime Minister H D Deve Gowda calling Chief Minister BS Yeddyurappa and state Advocate General Ashok Harnahalli ‘bastards’ on Sunday.

Gowda’s angry outburst came when he accused the CM and the Advocate General of conniving with the Nandi Infrastructure Corridor Enterprise Ltd (NICE), which he alleged had grabbed land from farmers for the Bangalore Mysore Infrastructure Corridor (BMIC) project.

The JD(S) president, however, later regretted his comments about Yeddyurappa. “I did not intended to hurt Yeddyurappa. I regret my words if he is really hurt. But people must understand the context in which I spoke,” he said. However, Gowda chose to stick by his words about Haranahalli.
