Ahmedabad blasts: Two arrested in Karnataka

ImageTwo more arrests were made in connection with the serial blasts in Ahmedabad from Karnataka on Tuesday (August 19).

In a joint operation by the Gujarat and Karnataka Anti-terror squads, the uncle-nephew duo of Dr Salim Honnali and Dr Ali Khan Pathan, both Unani medicine practitioners, were arrested on Tuesday evening from Bijapur district of North Karnataka.

The duo, the police claim, are known SIMI activists.  Honnali and Pathan were today (August 20) brought to Ahmedabad for further interrogation.

Meanwhile, Sajid Mansuri, one of the key persons behind the terror attacks of July 26, was yesterday brought to Bharuch by the Ahmedabad crime branch sleuths, police sources said.

Karnataka may set up authority for IT, BT, nano tech

ImageThe Karnataka government is considering to set up an authority exclusively for the information technology, biotechnology and nano technology in order to promote these sectors.

Chief Minister B S Yeddyurappa made the announcement after Chief Mentor of Infosys Technologies N R Narayana Murthy made out a case for such an authority last night at the launch of Karnataka Government's flagship IT event, 'Bangalore IT.biz', to be  held here from November 6.

The state government had decided to come out with a semi-conductor policy for Karnataka, given the vast opportunities in the sector, Yeddyurappa said at the function last night.

Karnataka police working closely with Gujarat counterparts

ImageAmid indications that ten suspected activists arrested in connection with recent blasts in Ahmedabad have links to the Bangalore serial explosions, Karnataka police on Saturday said it was working closely with their Gujarat counterparts.

"We are working in tandem with police of various other state police, including the Gujarat police," DGP Srikumar told on Saturday.

On whether it would send a team to Gujarat to gather more clues following the arrest of the mastermind and his associates in the Ahmedabad blast earlier in the day, the DGP said "if need be, we would do that".

Asked whether Gujarat police had sought help of its Karnataka counterparts amid indications that the same group, the Indian Mujahideen, a radical version of SIMI, could be behind the recent blasts in different states, including Karnataka, the police chief refused to comment.
 
Subdued Independence Day at Mangalore

ImageIt was a subdued Independence day held here today at the Nehru Maidaan in the city. The city which is in mourning on the drowning of school children at Kaikamba just a day before the Independence day did not have any cultural or entertainment programme connected with the Independence Day celebrations.

In a lacklustre celebrations the district minister Krishna Palemar hoisted the national flag and read out a report of the plans for the district. He said the government will construct a commercial complex near the office of Mangalore Urban Development Authority (MUDA) at Urwa Stores at an estimated cost of Rs. 3 crore followed by development of several house sites at an area of 9.81 acres  in Padavu village. Similar colonies will be laid out in Madhya and Chelar villages on a plot of 200 acres. He said the sites will be distributed to the economically poor classes of people.

Premkumar sworn in new Karnataka Chief Justice

ImageJustice Paul Daniel Dinakaran Premkumar was on Friday sworn-in as the Chief Justice of the Karnataka High Court. Governor Rameshwar Thakur administered the oath at a function held on the lawns of Raj Bhavan.

Chief Minister B S Yeddyurappa, his ministerial colleagues and top state officials were present.

Dinakaran, who was Judge of the Madras High Court, had recently been appointed Chief Justice of the Karnataka High Court following elevation of Justice Cyriac Joseph as Supreme Court Judge.
