BJP finds unique way to secure majority in Karnataka House |
Monday, 07 July 2008 |
The BJP received another shot in the arm in Karnataka on Sunday when Congress MLA J Narasimhaswamy resigned his Doddaballapur assembly seat and joined the party. Mr Narasimhaswamy is the second Congress MLA, in as many days, to quit the party in Karnataka. With this, the strength of the Congress in the 224-member assembly has been reduced to 78.
In a move that took political circles in Karnataka by surprise on Saturday, Mr Asnotikar Anand Vasant, Congress MLA from Karwar in the coastal region, and two JD(S) legislators — former minister Balachandra L Jarakhiholi and K Shivanagouda Naik — had resigned their assembly seats to join the BJP. While Mr Jarakhiholi had won the just-concluded assembly elections from Arabhavi, Mr Naik was the MLA from Devadurga (ST) seat.
The four leaders will now be fielded in by-elections by the BJP to enable the party to cross the half-way mark of 112 on its own. In all likelihood, they will be made ministers in the B S Yeddyurappa government. |

Sugarcane production in Karnataka heading for a slump |
Thursday, 03 July 2008 |
Sugarcane output in Karnataka could drop by as much as 18% during the October 2008-September 2009 sugar year from its 2007-08 peak even as four new mills are expected to commence crushing this season.
Karnataka is one of the country’s major producers of sugar, accounting for nearly 10% of the national output. Forecasts indicate that the national output could decrease by 20%, driven by a fall in area under cultivation. Sugarcane production follows a three-year cycle, 2007-08 expected to be a year of peak output.
“The state had a production of about 25 lakh tonne in 2006-07, which should be rising to over 28 lakh tonne this year. In 2008-09 we are preparing for a fall in sugar production as cane production is slated to decline,” a top industry source said. |
