12 from coastal districts bag Karnataka Rajyothsava Award - 2008 Print E-mail

ImageKarnataka Government headed by Chief Minister B.S. Yeddyurappa on Thursday selected 90 personalities, including 12 persons from three coastal districts of the State, have been selected for Karnataka Rajyothsava Award - 2008 for their outstanding contributions in various fields.

In the field of literature Ambatanaya Mudradi (Udupi) has been selected for the award while Mohan Das Pai of Infosys (Dakshina Kannada) bagged the coveted prize in the filed of Information Technology.

Other award winners from coastal districts are: educationist V.B. Kuthino (Uttara Kannada) and Kuranji Venkataramana Gowda (Dakshina Kananada); agricultural scientist P. Shetty (Udupi), Freedom Fighter  Hammanna Mani Naik (Uttara Kannada), Yakshgagana- K. Govinda Bhat, Sannakki Banglegudde, Patala Venkataramana Bhat (Dkashina Kannada), Fine Arts- B.G. Mohamad (Dakshina Kannada); Sculpture- Gunavantheshwar Bhat (Udupi); Social services and others- N. R. Narayana Rao ( Hotel-Udupi)

DVD and VCD of 'Padri' Konkani Movie Released Print E-mail

ImageRenowned lyricist Wilfy Rebimbus released the DVD and VCD of popular Konkani movie 'Padri' at Press Club here on Friday October 31.

While Raymond was the producer of the movie, Desmond Quadros co-produced it.

Speaking after releasing the DVD and VCD, Rebimbus said that the main objective of producing the movie is to add richness to the Konkani language. "We were aware about 'encouragement' given to the regional language in India. Movie theatres are not ready  to screen regional language films. Still we took risk and we succeed to some extent in our mission," he added.

Karnataka state awards announced Print E-mail

ISRO scientists Mayilsamy Annadurai and S K Shiva Kumar, Infosys official T V Mohandas Pai and senior journalist Imran Qureshi were among the winners of Karnataka state awards announced on Thursday.

The State gives away these annual awards for significant contributions in various fields on the State formation day on November 1. It carries Rs one lakh in cash, a plaque, a 20 gm gold medal and a shawl. This year, as many as 89 personalities were selected for the award.

Besides Annadurai, who is the Chandrayaan-1 unmanned moon mission Project Director, and Shiva Kumar, Director of ISRO Satellite Telemetry, Tracking and Command (ISTRAC) network here, the third winner in the science category was Prof. P Balaram, the Director of Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore.

Karnataka to spend Rs. 31,000 cr for tackling regional imbalances Print E-mail

Karnataka Government has decided to spend Rs. 31,000 crore for addressing regional imbalances in the State. The amount would be utilized for taking up development works in 114 backward taluks next few years.

The Government has formulated a Special Development Plan based on the late Nanjundappa committee report on regional imbalances in Karnataka.

Addressing journalists here on Saturday, High Power Committee for Redressal of Regional Imbalances Chairman Shashil Namoshi said the Nanjundappa Committee had applied 35 different parameters to arrive at that figure had further divided the taluks into three categories.

The Nanjudappa panel submitted its report during the S.M. Krishna Government. Most of the backward taluks were located in districts of north Karnataka, Kolar, Chamarajangar and Mysore, the report said.

No alliance with Congress: Gowda Print E-mail

ImageDonning the role of a martyr, JD(S) supremo H D Deve Gowda on Saturday announced his party will leave the electoral coast clear forthe Congress to wage its war against the BJP. His party will not venture into any re-alliance with the former for legislative assembly or Lok Sabha elections, he said.

At a pre-Diwali lunch for the media. Gowda said: “Our magnanimity in not pressing for an alliance may display our weakness. My party has a couple of people and we will carry forward the struggle.’’

However, prompted by former CM H D Kumaraswamy and state JD(S) spokesperson Y S V Datta, Gowda said his party was supporting the Congress for the three seats to the legislative council from the local authorities’ constituencies. Polls to these seats will be held on October 31.

Karnataka puts brakes on speed governors Print E-mail

ImageKarnataka Cabinet on Wednesday has decided to withdraw the controversial order directing all motor transport vehicle owners to get installed speed governors to their vehicles.

The Cabinet meeting chaired by Chief Minister B.S. Yeddyurappa took this decision following a strong protest from lorry owners associations in the State. The lorry owners association welcomed the Government decision.

Briefing the Cabinet decision, Minister for Transport R. Ashok said the State which has sought to implement the speed governor rule aimed to curb the speed of transport vehicles, including luxury taxis and buses. Based on a direction of the Central Government, the State issued an order in 2005 which prompted lorry operators in particular to move the High Court of Karnataka and thereafter, the Supreme Court.

Karnataka Rakshana Vedike Organizes Protest at Rly Station Print E-mail

ImageTo symbolically protest against the delaying tactics employed by the union government in according the 'classical' status to Kannada and the step-motherly treatment meted out to the language by the central government departments, activists of Dakshina Kannada district unit of Karnataka Rakshana Vedike (KRV) laid siege to the Mangalore Junction (Kankanady) railway station on Thursday October 23.

KRV activists led by office- bearers, then, handed over a memorandum addressed to the Prime Minister of the country through the station master of the railway station. Through the memorandum, the KRV has reminded the central government that Kannada is older than many of the world's leading languages including English and Hindi and that Kannada is the language which has won the highest number of Jnan Pith awards. Because of the pressure exerted by politicians from Tamil Nadu, the central government is keeping the demand of according the classical status to the language in limbo, it has alleged.

Karnataka to set up IT Parks in tier II cities Print E-mail

ImageKarnataka Government has now decided to set up Information Technology (IT) parks in second tier cities such as Shimoga, Gulbarga, Belgaum, Mysore, Mangalore and Hubli-Dharwad to attract investment both domestic and foreign in the software sector.

Minister for IT/BT Katta Subramanya Naidu told journalists on Tuesday that a decision has been taken to set up the IT Park near the Bangalore International Airport Limited, Devanahalli.

BJP Chief Minister B.S. Yeddyurappa will conduct Bhoomi pooja for IT parks in Shimoga, Gulbarga, Belgaum, Mangalore and Hubli-Dharwad in November. The foundation stones will be laid for IT parks in Myore and Bangalore in December, he said.

The government has already set up IT parks in Mangalore, Hubli and other parts of the State. There was no space for IT firms in the existing park at Hubli and Mangalore, he said.
