The Centre has agreed to release 1.4 lakh tonnes of di-ammonium phosphate (DAP) fertiliser for Karnataka this month, 20,000 tonnes more than the state's estimated requirement. The announcement came after State Chief Minister B S Yeddyurappa met Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and Fertiliser Minister Ramvilas Paswan in New Delhi on Wednesday night. Karnataka has witnessed violent protests by farmers demanding fertilisers in recent days. On Tuesday, one farmer was killed in police firing at Haveri town. "The Prime Minister gave a patient hearing and listened to the problem of fertiliser shortages in Karnataka," said Yeddyurappa in a statement on the outcome of his Delhi visit. "He expressed solidarity with the people of Karnataka and assured every possible effort to solve the fertiliser shortage crisis." Yeddyurappa said Paswan assured supply of 1.2 lakh tonnes of DAP by June 20. Another 20,000 tonnes of the fertiliser will be made available by June 30. Similarly, 1.1 lakh tonnes of complex fertilisers (supply for entire June) will be made available by June 20, said the Chief Minister. |
