Centre to set up 43 polytechnics in Karnataka

The Centre is likely to set up 43 new polytechnics in the state, according to sources in the department of technical education. It has sought financial assistance from the World Bank for the promotion of technical education in the country. The World Bank has stipulated the number of technical institutions that should be set up in the country for extending financial assistance. Hence, the Centre plans to set up polytechnics with cent per cent funding. The number of polytechnics the Centre will set up in each state will be equal to the number of polytechnics set up by the respective state governments, since 2008-09. The Karnataka government has set up 21 polytechnics in 2008-09 and announced that 22 polytechnics would be set up in 2009-10. The departments of technical education of the respective states will be the nodal agencies for setting up and maintenance of these Central polytechnics. Apart from availing the service of additional faculty of polytechnics of the respective state governments, lecturers will be appointed on contract basis to meet the teaching staff requirement. However, the state government has to submit a list of places where these the 43 polytechnics will come up. Yelburga and Kinhal in Koppal district find a place in the list prepared by the state government for setting up Central polytechnics.
