India's progress in leprosy eradication efforts has been spectacular and the participatory work by governmental and voluntary agencies is laudable, observed Mr. S. Vijaya Kumar in Bangalore on Tuesday. We are happy that the cherished dream of the Father of our nation for leprosy elimination has come true, he added. It is heartening that IDF rededicates its service for the development of nation as it celebrates silver jubilee, Mr. Vijaya Kumar expressed.Mr. S. Vijaya Kumar, Asst. Commissioner, Kendriya Vidyalaya Sangathan, Bangalore Region was speaking as the Chief Guest of Indian Development Foundation's (IDF) Silver Jubilee Year Grants Release Function at Yavanika, State Youth Centre, Bangalore on 21st October 2008. He gave away IDF Grants to leprosy/ TB hospitals and projects in Karnataka region. IDF has earmarked Grants totaling Rs.47 lakhs to 80 health/ development projects all over India during the year. Mr. Vijaya Kumar presented Awards to 32 Principals of Schools in Karnataka zone with star performance record of health awareness programmes and resource mobilisation and awarded 145 students with Medals and certificates for their signal contribution. Vivekananda Girijana Kalyana Kendra- BR Hills, Hubli Hospital for the Handicapped, Hubli; St. Joseph's Leprosy Hospital, Mangalore; Hind Kusht Nivaran Sangh, DK Branch, Mangalore and Sumanahalli Society, Bangalore received grants for health, education and rural development work. Prestigious Mother Teresa Memorial Award 2007-08 was presented to Christ School, Dharmaram, Bangalore for outstanding resource mobilisation for leprosy/ TB work in Karnataka region. Rev. Fr. Joseph Rathapilly, Principal of the School received the Award on behalf of the School. SOCIAL ACTION AWARDS 2007-08 were presented to Principals and Teachers for their excellent Social Responsibility during 2007-08. IDF young ambassadors - Karan Dravid, Shanker Sai and Nishchit - doing excellent work in social development areas shared their experiences to the young students gathered at the function. Dr. A. R. K. Pillai, founder President, Indian Development Foundation who presided over the function said the government and voluntary agencies worked hand in hand with admirable co-operation to achieve the leprosy elimination status in India. Dr.Pillai thanked the public for their understanding and continued support. Sharing resources and serving others give greater joy and this will be the gospel for the future, Dr. Pillai added. Dr. H. Sudarshan, Hon. Secretary, Karuna Trust, BR Hills stressed on the aspect of village and rural development. He said IDF Grants Release Function is an annual feature of Indian Development Foundation to share its resources with leprosy/ TB/ rural development projects and promote self-reliance. Dr. Chambi Puranik, Academic Advisor, Mysore Maharaja Institute of Higher Education and Dr. Kumaraswamy Lal, Joint Director (Tuberculosis), Govt. of Karnataka - appreciated students participation in health awareness programmes. The Guests of Honour complimented Indian Development Foundation's role in India's fight against leprosy/TB and for widening its activities to include health care, education and development. Christ School, Dharmaram, Bangalore topped the list in resource mobilisation for leprosy/ TB while the second and third places went to Goodwill Girls High School, Frazer Town, Bangalore and Standard English School, Peenya Dasarahalli, Bangalore respectively. Rashmi M. Dodmani from Loyola Convent School, Gadag topped the list of students in resource mobilisation for leprosy/ TB work while C. Cynthia Jennifer from Goodwill Girls High School, Bangalore and Aditya D. Jain from TMAE's DAV School, Hospet got second and third positions respectively. People from all walks of life attended the well organised function. Earlier Dr. S. Franklin, Area Manager (Karnataka), IDF welcomed and introduced the guests, while Mr. H. Gurumurthy, Field Officer, IDF proposed a vote of thanks. Dr. Narayan B. Iyer, National Co-ordinator, IDF compered at the function. Choir from Christ School, Bangalore rendered the invocation prayer while students from Mary Immaculate Bal Gurukul gave a group performance. Nursing students from Matru College of Nursing, Bangalore volunteered at the event. |
