Men commuters beware! You no longer can occupy the seats reserved for women in city buses. The Belgaum cops on Friday launched a drive to ensure women to sit on the seats reserved for them in the city buses.Though there is a provision for women, physically challenged persons and senior citizens to have reserved seats in North- Western Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation (NWKSRTC) buses, the norm is not being followed strictly in Belgaum. Most of the commuters of NWKSRTC buses in Belgaum did not hesitate to occupy the seats reserved for women, physically challenged persons and senior citizens. On many occasions, senior citizens and women had to request the people to vacate the seats reserved for the former but in vain. There were instances of those unauthorised commuters indulge in verbal duel with women and senior citizens. It was noticed that even the bus driver and conductor fail to vacate the commuters from the seats reserved for women, senior citizens and physically challenged persons. Sonia Narang, Superintendent of Police told The New Indian Express that a survey was conducted by the police on the misuse of seats reserved for women, senior citizens and physically challenged persons. The survey indicated that many people occupy the seats reserved for women, senior citizens and physically challenged persons thus making the latter to stand in the bus. ‘‘No one had the courtesy to offer the seats for women, senior citizens and physically challenged persons,’’ Sonia said. |
