Fourteen distinguished scientists were honoured today by the Karnataka State Council for Science and Technology at a colorful function held at IISc in Bangalore. Chief Minister B.S. Yeddyurappa and Minister for Science and Technology Anand Vasant Asnotikar gave away the awards for the years 2006 and 2007 under five categories.Speaking on the occasion, Yeddyurappa said that Scientists play a important role in the development of a state and building a great nation. "Scientists and Engineers should come forward and help the government in building Karnataka a model state," he said urging the scientists to focus their research on rural sector and reach the technology to the rural populace. He reminded the scientists that Sir M Visweswaraiah was not only a renowned scientist of yesteryears but was also a good administrator. He said Karnataka Government wish to take education and technology to rural people through its various schemes. The scientific adviser to the PM, Prof CNR Rao speaking on the occasion said that Karnataka state was a decade ahead of other states in science and technology when India got independence. Since then Karnataka has consistently made progress in Information and Bio Tech sectors. "When education and science go hand in hand then only we can claim that we have made progress in science" said Rao. Prof Rao urged the Government to set up world class universities in the state in order to attract people from around the world. Senior Scientist Awardee Prof KJ Rao on this occasion called on the Government not only to recognize the contribution of scientists and present them with awards but to encourage them in their research and work with them towards the development of state. He suggested the Government to have interactive sessions and exchange views with the scientists which will not only help them to understand the need of the Government but also help them to narrow down their study on subjects related to the need of the society. Science and Technology Minister Anand Vasant Asnotikar speaking on the occasion said that Prof CNR Rao has been appointed as the head of science and technology vision group constituted by the state government. On this occasion N. Rudraiah and K.J. Rao were honoured with Sir M. Visvesvaraya Senior Scientist Award while B.G. Mulimani and M. Shadaksharaswamy were honoured with Dr. Raja Ramanna Scientist Award. Srikanth Sastry, Uday B. Muthane, S. Krishna Prasad and N.B. Ramachandra were awarded Sir C.V. Raman Award; Gopalan Jagadeesh, T.V. Ramachandra, G.S. Bhat, K. Prakash, and K.S. Jayappa were awarded Prof. Satish Dhawan Award and M.K. Kokila was honoured with Kalpana Chawla award. |
