An all-party delegation from Karnataka, led by state CM B S Yeddyurappa, met Union Home Minister Shivraj Patil and sought classical language status for Kannada. They requested Patil to consider this long pending demand at the earliest. Giving an assurance to the delegation, the home minister said that a committee of linguistic experts was looking into the demand for categorization of languages as classical languages. "As regards amendment to Article 371, Patil told the delegation that the matter would be looked into after it is sent with recommendation of the state in the required form," said an official. Meanwhile, Karnataka HC held that the state policy compelling children studying in government-recognised but unaided schools to have primary education only in mother tongue or Kannada language was violative of the Constitution. The court, however, held that the government policy introducing Kannada as first language to children whose mother tongue is Kannada was valid. |
