Another attack on Christian prayer halls was reported from St Anthony Catholic Church at Yedavanahalli village in Attibele, near Hosur, in Karnataka on Monday.According to the police, a fire was noticed at 1 am by two police constables posted at the church, following the series of attacks on churches earlier this month. Although properties estimated at Rs10 lakh was believed to have been destroyed in the fire, no deaths or injuries were reported. Local people, who were called for help by the constables, took two hours to bring the fire under control. However, the entire backside of the church that housed religious materials was completely gutted. Fr C Moses, the Parish priest of Begur, who rushed to the spot, told DNA that this was the handiwork of the miscreants. "Around four to five miscreants are believed to have entered the church and set fire the Holy Bible, hymn books, musical instruments and amplifiers used for prayer. In the process, the Tabernacle, a dozen of Chalices and at least 50 vestments were completely gutted." Many burnt religious books were found about 20 feet away from the shelves where they were kept. A part of the carpet caught fire from the burning books. The two police constables, Nagaraj and Raghavendra Kumar, who were on night duty, said they kept the church's main door open so that they can take shelter if it rained. "While we were taking rounds of the church, we spotted fire through the glass window and rushed to douse it in vain," Kumar said. |
