Karnataka is also not much better off as it continues to wait for the rain. The rain is playing havoc with Karnataka this year. They started early, and then seemed to stop for a while. And while parts of Bangalore are flooding, north Karnataka is parched and waiting for the monsoon to resume. ''For the last two years, the rain was good, but this year it is bad. We will not survive if the rain does not come,'' said Vittal Durgannavar, a Bailhongal farmer. ''Without the rain everything has dried up. We have spent five to six thousand per acre that is wasted. There is no other work available for us. How do we survive? There is a problem for drinking water,'' said Shivananda Hudakeri, farmer. The state government has not yet officially declared a drought - but is making contingency plans. ''We have prepared action plan for six crore. In Athani Taluka eight villages are facing drinking water problem. For the villages we are going to supply drinking waters through tankers,'' said DB Naik, Ceo, Zilla Panchayat, Belgaum District. The shortage of rainfall has affected the state's power situation as well. The state depends largely on hydroelectricity - so that is just one more reason why the rain is needed. |
