Undergraduate students of St Aloysius College staged a protest against Principal Fr Swebert DSilva for allegedly assaulting a student on Friday. According to the students, Amogh, a second year BBM student, was stopped by the security guard for overspeeding his mobike in the campus. He took Amogh’s identity card and handed over to the Principal. As Amogh approached the Principal to collect his ID card, the Principal allegedly slapped Amogh.Enraged over the incident, all the students boycotted the class after 11 am. In fact, by 11.15 over 3,000 students gathered at the campus and they demanded the principal to seek an apology. They also urged the Principal’s transfer. However, when contacted, Principal Fr Swebert D’Silva said that he only pinched Amogh’s ears and in the melee, his nails made some minor bruise on the student’s cheeks. Later in the evening, St Aloysius Institutions Rector Fr Francis Serrao chaired a meeting in which student leaders and lecturers took part. Speaking to Fr Serrao said that the students only demand was that such incidents should never occur in the College. “As I personally assured the students that such incidents would never occur in the College, the issue has been settled,” he said and added that the Principal too has apologised for the incident. |
