It was a subdued Independence day held here today at the Nehru Maidaan in the city. The city which is in mourning on the drowning of school children at Kaikamba just a day before the Independence day did not have any cultural or entertainment programme connected with the Independence Day celebrations.In a lacklustre celebrations the district minister Krishna Palemar hoisted the national flag and read out a report of the plans for the district. He said the government will construct a commercial complex near the office of Mangalore Urban Development Authority (MUDA) at Urwa Stores at an estimated cost of Rs. 3 crore followed by development of several house sites at an area of 9.81 acres in Padavu village. Similar colonies will be laid out in Madhya and Chelar villages on a plot of 200 acres. He said the sites will be distributed to the economically poor classes of people. He said the city will also get new markets in various places mainly in Bejai, Urwa, Surathkal, while the Central Market will be fully redone. He further outlined the plans to build a multi-level car parking and commercial complex at the old bus stand at Hampankatta. Mr.Palemar also announced on this occasion that the MCC will start building the second vented dam across the Nethravati river for which the work will begin after the rainy season at a cost of Rs. 40 crores. This will store enough water for the city upto the year 2025 he added. The new dam will have automatic sluice gates. Other development programmes announced by the minister on this occasion included the concretization of the roads to the airport from Kavoor and Maravoor and the stretch from KPT to Bondel has already been concretised. The minister announced that the state government had added Mangalore in the proposed industrial highway corridor in the state which was being planned by the government. |
